WHEN Mary Catherine Bateson was a freshman at Radcliffe, she and the man she was dating went to hear her mother, Margaret Mead, lecture on the future of the American family. Afterward, back in her beau’s room, Dr. Bateson averred that the future of the American family would surely not include her, because with role models like her parents — Dr. Bateson likes to say that her mother was thrice divorced while her father, the British anthropologist Gregory Bateson, was thrice married — she would never, ever marry.

“How could I possibly know how?” she said.

Yet by the end of that conversation, Dr. Bateson, who went on to have careers as an anthropologist, linguist and author, and J. Barkev Kassarjian, now a professor of management and a business consultant, found themselves engaged.

They’re still married. Here’s the rest of the article…

August 13, 2010 Perseids
And when we say August 13, we mean the morning hours after midnight … not that night. These typically fast and bright meteors radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus, and, like all meteors in annual showers, they cover a large part of the sky. The Perseids are considered by many people to be the year’s best shower, and often peak at 50 or more meteors per hour. Fortunately, the slender waxing crescent moon will set at early evening, leaving a dark sky for this year’s Perseid show. The Perseids tend to strengthen in number as late night deepens into midnight, and typically produce the most meteors in the wee hours before dawn. These meteors are often bright and frequently leave persistent trains. On the night of August 12-13, watch the Perseid meteors adorn this short summer night from late night till dawn. Lie back and watch meteors until dawn’s light washes the stars and planets from the sky. A day before and after the peak date should be good, too.
